The fun thing about following the discographies of one-man-bands is tracking that singular artist’s emotions over time. Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight is Dieter Sermeus’s third album as The Go Find in six years, and while he has recruited a band to back him up, it’s still a largely solo affair. 2004′s Miami was a heavily electronic post-Postal Service jumble of jingles for hopeless romantics. 2007′s Stars on the Wall opened the space for more acoustic instrumentation, and with that introduced a quiet emptiness that suggested loneliness and abandonment. Sure, there were sad songs on Miami, but they usually ended with a flurry of energy and a chorus of duplicated voices, proving that Dieter himself was all the company he needed to stave off those cold Belgian nights. For Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight, however, Dieter gets by with a little help from his friends, and in doing so makes his most fully human album to date.
There are head-boppers in the title track, “Neighbourhood,” and “Cherry Pie” right alongside the subtler wintery croons of “Love Will Break Us Apart” and “Stay.” “One Hundred Percent” might be The Go Find’s catchiest hook since his debut single “Over The Edge,” and the lingering closer “Heart of Gold” feels like what would happen if Death Cab For Cutie listened to nothing but Daft Punk’s “Emotion.” Every track benefits from the trust Dieter has placed in his fellow musicians and guest vocalists, invoking the vibe of a bunch of like-minded kids jamming in a log cabin with a healthy supply of hot cocoa. It’s likely The Go Find will never meet the raw emotional charge of its experimental debut, but Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight shows that his songwriting ability has grown in leaps and bounds into something genuinely likable for pop mindsets that reach outside the niche of the blogosphere. A lot of songwriters would do well to study this man’s progress and keep an eye on his future.
